Sawyer County is mostly underlain by complex suite of Precambrian rocks, which rarely outcrop due to thick glacial drift. Rock collecting can be fruitful in the glacial debris, which can produce on occasion "Lake Superior" agates, banded iron formation, drift copper nuggets and a variety of other rocks.
