Complex Precambrian rocks underlie Vilas County, which are obscured by thick glacial drift, lakes, forests and marshes. Scattered outcrops and drill core reveal older gneissic terrane overlain by Lower Proterozoic meta-sedimentary and meta-volcanic rocks, including iron formation, likely representing an island arc sequence. These are in turn intruded by various ages of granite. The extensive glacial drift in the County can provide some interesting samples to the diligent collector, including "float" copper, banded iron formation and "Lake Superior" agates.
