Yanga Koubanza deposit

Quarries that were intensively explored in the 1940s and 1960s. Real mining of the deposit started as recently as 2016.

Copper deposit estimated to contain 5.53 Mt grading 8% lead, 7% zinc and 1.9% copper. Apparently briefly mined for Zn-Pb.
The deposit is covered by exploration licences, including the Boko Songho licence.

Geological audit of the Yanga-Koubenza mine in the mid 1980s on behalf of Ministry of Mines - Congo. At this time, the mine was an open pit ca. 150 m long by 20 to 30 m deep.

The deposit was constituted of oxidized Zn ore (mostly "earthy" smithsonite + some hemimorphite + some cerussite). Concentration was by gravimetric methods aiming to recover the zinc oxides. No sulfides visible in the pit. No copper alteration minerals (malachite and azurite) visible in the pit. Some aurichalcite was present at the outer limits of the pit.
Technical management (mine and concentration) was headed by a Russian team.
