Mafic-ultramafic complex, intruded along the north side of the east-west trending Hongshila-Damiao deep fault into Archean metamorphic rocks in the northern rim of the North China Craton. The complex, which consists mainly of anorthosite, hypersthene-rich monzonite (mangerite) and adamellite, formed in a post-collisional extensional setting during the Paleo-Mesoproterozoic and is itself intruded by Middle Devonian norite gabbro and Jurassic diorite. In addition, minor pyroxene amphibolite occurs in its southwestern part.

Norite gabbro in the Damiao complex is host to numerous disseminated and vein-type ore bodies that consist essentially of titaniferous and vanadiferous magnetite and apatite (so-called "nelsonite"). These deposits are referred to in the Chinese geoscientific literature as Damiao-type iron deposits. Also note that the term "Damiao deposit" mostly refers to the Damiao complex in general and not specifically to the Damiao Mine.

The complex which is roughly triangular in plan view and has an outcrop area of about 90 km2 straddles the border of several counties: its central southern and southeastern parts, including the Heishan and Maying mines, are located in Chengde County, its northern and northeastern parts are located in Longhua County and its southwestern part is located in Luanping County. In addition, a stretch of land around Damiao town, including the Damiao Mine, belongs to Shuangluang county-level district.
