El Barreal

A dry lake about 50 miles (ca. 80 km) south of Puerto Palomas, which is a small town on the New Mexico border with the United States. The lake is known for its large tan/brown gypsum crystals, which it produces in abundance. The lake is best approached from the highway running from Ciudad Juárez to Villa Ahumada on the east.

Here is what Peter Megaw says about the locality:

"The big brown blades come from the west side of Laguna Guzman, aka "El Barreal", a large playa lake that lies just west of Villa Ahumada. They dig pits in the lake sands and use buckets to sluice water over the beds, and the specimens emerge. If you look at the Google Earth image, you can see the rows of pits that have been excavated over the years. You can collect a dump truck full in a day. They are graded in size too… very handy… topmost beds are 2-4", next down go up to 6-8" and the lower beds get up to 15-24" across."
