Chiang Rai Province is the northernmost province of Thailand, covering approximately 11,700 km². It borders Myanmar to the north and west, Laos to the north-east and east, and the Thai provinces of Chiang Mai to the south-west and Phayao to the south. The provincial capital is Chiang Rai. The province occupies a strategically important position in the Golden Triangle region, near the meeting point of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar.
Geographically, Chiang Rai Province is dominated by mountainous and hilly terrain, with deeply incised river valleys and intermontane basins. The province forms part of the Thai Highlands, with elevations commonly ranging from lowland river plains to rugged mountain ridges exceeding 1,500 m. Major rivers include the Kok, Ing, and Lao rivers, all tributaries of the Mekong River, which forms part of the province’s northern boundary. The climate is tropical monsoonal, with a distinct wet season and cooler conditions in upland areas.
Geologically, Chiang Rai lies within the Shan–Thai (Sibumasu) terrane, one of the major tectonic blocks of mainland Southeast Asia. The province is underlain by a complex assemblage of Palaeozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary, volcanic, and metamorphic rocks, affected by multiple phases of folding and faulting during the assembly of Southeast Asia. Limestones and dolomites are widespread and locally form karst landscapes, while sandstones, shales, and volcanic rocks occur elsewhere. Granitic intrusions are present and are locally associated with mineralisation.
Chiang Rai Province has a modest mineral and extractive heritage, primarily involving industrial and construction materials. Quarrying of limestone, sand, gravel, and building stone is widespread for local use. Small-scale and historic workings for gold, tin, and base metals have been reported in parts of the province, often associated with granitic intrusions and structurally controlled veins, though large-scale metal mining has not developed. Alluvial sediments in river systems may locally contain placer minerals.
Historically, Chiang Rai was the first capital of the Lanna Kingdom, founded in the 13th century, and later came under Burmese and then Siamese control before being fully integrated into modern Thailand in the late 19th century. The province retains a strong Lanna cultural identity, reflected in language, architecture, and traditions, and is home to numerous ethnic minority groups inhabiting upland areas.
Administratively, Chiang Rai Province is subdivided into districts (amphoe). Its rugged terrain, borderland position, and complex geology have shaped settlement patterns, land use, and limited extractive activity. The province’s geological setting within the Shan–Thai terrane makes it relevant for understanding the tectonic evolution of northern Thailand and the broader mineral systems of mainland Southeast Asia, even though mining today is largely small-scale and locally focused.
