The town of Dunstable was incorporated in 1673. The underlying rock is what is called Merrimack schist, a gneissic formation of the Eozoic Period.
In 1877, Elias Nason described Dunstable as having "an immense ledge, two thirds of a mile east of the centre, [which] furnishes several kinds of minerals". Nason also mentions bog-iron ore, clay, crystallized quartz, conglomerate, ferruginous gneiss, and asbestos.
