Sainyabuli Province (also spelled Xayaburi or Sayaboury) is a province in north-western Laos, covering approximately 16,400 km². It is unique among Lao provinces in that it lies entirely west of the Mekong River, bordering Thailand to the west and north, and the Lao provinces of Bokeo, Oudomxay, Luang Prabang, and Vientiane to the east and south. The provincial capital is Sainyabuli (Xayabury). The province occupies a transitional zone between Laos and northern Thailand.

Geographically, Sainyabuli Province is characterised by mountainous and hilly terrain, with parallel ridges, narrow valleys, and intervening basins. Elevations are generally lower than in northern Laos but still rugged, with extensive forested areas and agricultural valleys. The region is drained by westward-flowing tributaries of the Mekong River, including the Nam Heung and Nam Pouy, many of which cross into Thailand. The climate is tropical monsoonal, with a pronounced wet season and warm to hot conditions year-round.

Geologically, Sainyabuli Province lies within the Indochina Block, a major tectonic terrane of mainland Southeast Asia. The bedrock consists mainly of Palaeozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks, including sandstones, shales, limestones, and conglomerates, locally interbedded with volcanic units. These rocks have been folded and faulted during multiple orogenic events related to the assembly of Southeast Asia. Carbonate formations are widespread and give rise to locally developed karst landscapes, while intrusive rocks occur in places and may be associated with mineralisation.

The mineral and extractive heritage of Sainyabuli Province is limited and largely small-scale. Known mineral occurrences include gold, copper, and base metals, typically in structurally controlled veins or altered zones. Limestone, sand, gravel, and construction stone are more commonly extracted for local use. Alluvial deposits along rivers may contain placer minerals, though systematic exploitation has been limited. Mining and quarrying activities are regulated under Lao national legislation and are generally modest in scale.

Historically, Sainyabuli has been a borderland region, culturally and economically linked to northern Thailand. During the colonial period it was part of French Indochina, but unlike most of Laos, the area west of the Mekong was administered separately at times and was transferred between Siam (Thailand) and French control before being incorporated into modern Laos. Since 1975, it has been part of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. The province retains strong cross-border cultural and economic ties with Thailand.

Administratively, Sainyabuli Province is subdivided into districts (muang). Its position west of the Mekong, combined with its geological setting within the Indochina Block, gives the province a distinct identity within Laos. While not a major mining region, its geology and terrain provide insight into the structural evolution of north-western Laos and the broader tectonic framework of mainland Southeast Asia.
