The most valuable mines on Ninemile Creek and the head of Beaver Creek, immediately to the north, are primarily zinc producers, and their lodes are described elsewhere (pp. 90-105). There are, however, several which have yielded more lead than zinc. These are the Tamarack and Custer, Sunset, Idora, Tuscumbia, and several others not now active. Formerly the Callahan, Rex (Sixteen-to-One), and Success (Granite) mines were worked for lead, but now zinc is the chief metal of their ores.
The deposits, except the California, which is enclosed in the Revett quartzite, occur in the Prichard and Burke formations. In general they are steeply dipping lodes which strike north of west.
The Tamarack and Custer mine, controlled by the Hecla, is an old mine reopened in 1913 and active since that time except for short periods of idleness. During the three years prior to 1916 the mine produced ore to the gross value of $2,600,921, principally from lead. As access to the mine was not granted the only information available is that recorded by Ransome. Prior to 1904 it produced ore of a total gross value of $600,000. The lode occurs in Burke quartzite high up on the west slope of Custer Peak. It is a well-defined fissure containing galena and a little chalcopyrite and pyrite in a quartz gangue.
