An interesting if not mysterious locality. Approx 2 miles south of Normanville, on the face of a steep hill, are the remains of a shaft and several small adits. Copper was found here sometime between 1860 and 1863. Mining commenced in 1865 and ceased in 1867, with further attempts in 1890 and 1898.
No production figures have ever been recorded and the mine is now filled in. The property owner does not allow people near the site, so no attempt should be made to visit.
However, several ‘old’ geological maps also pinpoint this locality as having radioactive minerals, namely torbernite and autunite. Interestingly the ‘Catalogue of South Australian Minerals – 1983’ lists meta-torbernite as being at a locality 3 km south of Yankalilla, this is neither the correct distance or direction to match this listing (4km SW). These same maps, however, do not show a site for these minerals in the region listed in the Catalogue?
