Two Harbors is a city and the county seat of Lake County. The city is on Lake Superior's shores approximately 30 miles northeast of Duluth. Two Harbors is known for being a shipping hub for processed iron ore from the Mesabi Iron Range.

The 3M Company was founded in Two Harbors in 1902. It survived an initial mineralogical error when founders mistook plagioclase in anorthosite for corundum and attempted to start an abrasive industry on that basis.

Bedrock geology consists of Precambrian (1.1 billion year old Keweenawan) basalt lava flows and gabbroic plutons, well exposed in road cuts and in outcrops along the shore of Lake Superior.
