This quarry is in the Woody Island Siltstone, a Permian Mudstone (about 260-270 million years old). It was obviously deposited during an ice age, as indicated by some large glendonites (to 100mm) found in the mudstone. These are calcite pseudomorphs after ikaite, a mineral only found in near-freezing water. There are also some glacial dropstones, some large bivalves and, most interestingly for many collectors, some large pyrite concretions. These form some weird shapes, including tubes and “cow-pads”, some possibly replacing fossils, glendonites, coprolites(?) or worm tubes, and indicate a very anoxic (oxygen-poor) environment. Historically, gold was found in the nearby Gold Creek .
