Small archipelago comprising two major islands and several islets of varying sizes, that represent the southernmost region of Portugal.

The Selvagens Islands Nature Reserve has a total area of 9,455 hectares, is bounded by the 200-meter depth contour and includes all islands and islets. Through the total protection status, the ecosystems of the entire terrestrial area (Selvagem Grande, Selvagem Pequena, Ilhéu de Fora and adjacent islets) and the entire adjacent marine area are protected.

The Selvagens Islands comprise three islands, Selvagem Grande, Selvagem Pequena and Ilhéu de Fora.

Selvagem Grande has a pentagonal shape, and is the largest and tallest of the three islands. It is characterized by a very sharp relief and an extensive plateau area that falls abruptly over the sea, elevated to about 100 meters above sea level. The highest point is reached at Pico da Atalaia, at 163 meters, where there is a lighthouse.

The Selvagem Pequena has an irregular shape, low profile and flat. It reaches a maximum altitude of 49 meters, at Pico do Veado, where there is a lighthouse.

Ilhéu de Fora is the smallest of the three islands. The maximum altitude is reached in Pitão Pequeno, with 18 meters.

Geochronology

Mineralization age: Neogene : 11.71 ± 0.48 Ma to 3.36 ± 0.16 Ma

Important note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
