Originally worked together with Wheal Fanny (SX 521 883) although the workings are over a mile apart.
Tor Wood Mines were assumed to lie on an extension of the sulphide-rich mineralised bed worked by the Forest and Homerton mines to the east. Little is known of the mines history, although it was being worked in the 1820s when an adit was driven over 70 fathoms on a lead lode averaging two feet in width.
The set was advertised for sale in 1828, no further working is known.
May, 2021. The mine crosses the small brook with 2 tips of pale grey and yellow soft killas on the hillside to the west and a tip of brown iron oxide cemented killas on the east. A level platform has been cut into the hillside exposing a thrust fault complex which appears to be the source of the mineralization. This is supported by the water than flows out of the fault which delivers considerable iron rich acid rock drainage to the stream. In the main stream is a channel built of large granite blocks, approximately 2 feet wide and 4 feet deep though clearly some has fallen in, but it appears to be a wheel pit. A level area could be a dressing floor. A leat skirts the hillside on the east. The tips of pale material appear barren for metal minerals but the iron cemented one produces pyrite and arsenopyrite.
