Tissint meteorite

Stone, Achondrite, Martian (Shergottite).
Depleted picritic shergottite similar to EETA79001, lithology A.
Witnessed fall 18 July 2011, 2:00 AM. Total known weight >7 kg.

Several locals observed a bright fireball in the Oued Drâa Valley 50 km east-southeast of Tata. Initially no stones were recovered, but after diligent searches by nomads, finally, in October 2011 several glassy black fusion crusted stones were recovered. Due to the lack of terrestrial weathering, we can be fairly certain the stones recovered here are from this fall. Several hundred stones from 0.1 g to over 1 kg have been recovered with estimates of the total recovered weight varying from 7 to 20 kg.
A 908,7 g heavy piece is on display in the Natural History Museum Vienna.

This is the fifth recovered witnessed Martian meteorite fall. It is an olivine-phyric shergottite that is related to and possibly launched paired with SaU 005 (plus parings), NWA 1195, NWA 2046 NWA 2626, NWA 4925, NWA 5789, NWA 6162, DaG 476 (plus parings) and Yamato 980459.
While most of the meteorite fragments were not recovered for two+ months after the fall, the meteorite shows minimal indications of terrestrial weathering.

Because of the fractured maskelynite (~20 vol%)and other delicate features from preterrestrial Martian impacts remain almost entirely intact (Balt et al., 2015). Following a similar line of argument, some isotopic signatures [light carbon (low in C-13) associated with Deuterium-enriched hydrogen (δD up to +1183‰)] of organic carbon in shock-melt veins are difficult to account for in terms of known carbonaceous chondrites and other possible abiotic sources. Thus, Lin et al. (2014) have again raised the possibility of biogenic carbon in a Martian meteorite.
