Feistereck (Finstereck), Gollrad, Mariazell, Steiermark, Österreich
An ancient iron mine, owned and operated by the Abbey St. Lambrecht in Mariazell already in 1103, it was shut down several times for economic and political reasons, re-opened in 1783 and closed by the end of the 19th century. Attempts were made by Hans von Pengg in 1919 to re-start the mine, but without success.
It is located about 7.8 km N of Turnau.
The workings comprised:
N-slope, older mine, 2 adits (Josefi Stollen 1468 m, at approx. N47.62785 E15.32446 and Johanni Stollen 1449 m, at approx. N47.62871 E15.32436), about 250 m long and 1 open pit.
S-slope, younger mine, 2 adits (Jakobi Bau, at approx. N47.62182 E15.32167), about 130 m long).
Considering the fact that this enterprise was in operation, with interruptions, for about 800 years, there may have been more adits and open pits.
The mine was most of the time operated jointly with the Fladenalm mine. The ore (like the ore from Fladenalp, Eibelkogel and Greithgraben) was shipped to the furnace in Greith (3 km SE of the mine). The furnace in Greith (Kreit, Kreith) was in operation from the 14th century, with interruptions, until the end of the 19th century. The furnace was finally demolished in 1960.
