Eind Plenkert groeve, Valkenburg, Limburg, Nederland
The Groeve Einde Plenkertweg is a marl quarry and geological monument in Dutch South Limburg in the municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul. The underground limestone quarry is located in the hamlet of Plenkert west of Valkenburg on the Plenkertstraat. The quarry is located on the northwestern edge of the Polferbos forest on the northern edge of the Margraten Plateau in the transition to the Geuldal. At the site, the plateau plunges steeply for several meters.
About 600 meters to the west is the Vilter quarry, about 30 meters to the west is the Heytgracht Pump Station, about 45 meters to the southwest is the Carolus quarry and about 250 meters to the east are the Roman Catacombs and the Heide quarry.
The quarry was mined by block crushers for the extraction of limestone blocks.
The Einde Plenkertweg quarry consists of a once-branched corridor of ten meters in length.
The entrance to the quarry is closed, so that bats can use the quarry as a roost.
The manager of the quarry is the municipality of Valkenburg. In 2017, the quarry was examined for safety and approved.
The quarry was constructed in the highest part of the Nekum Limestone from the Maastricht Formation. The quarry was mined because people were looking for useful building blocks for building houses. When the quarry was mined, it soon became apparent that the quality of the limestone in the quarry was too poor for sawing building blocks. The limestone at this level is very variable in composition. This means that this limestone is not resistant to weather influences such as rain and frost. The types of fossils most commonly found in this limestone are those of sea urchins of the species Hemipneustes striatoradiatus, of which only a few fragments are usually found in the marl.
Above the quarry entrance, the Caster Horizont can be seen in the limestone wall, with the Meerssen Limestone above it.
