Back in 1965, a trench was dug in the Lubumbashi Zoo for unspecified purposes. A man recovered quartz crystals and the geological services of the Union Minière where informed. That same evening and night, in a pouring rain and mud, some collectors found and collected more crystals. They had to hurry before the geological service closed the area the very next day. It seems that other collectors where informed of the find. Initially, smoky quartz was recovered but other collectors found some amethyst clusters further on the trench.
