Köppen climate type:
Pforte has been a train station of the first train line between Swakopmund and Windhoek, built in German South-West Africa (now Namibia), from 1898 until 1902. The locality is known for well-crystallized dark violet to nearly black fluorite octahedrons and fine groups of crystals up to 4 cm in size. The fluorites might have been found during the construction of the railway tracks and station, due to extensive earth and rocks movements in a difficult topographic environment and/or in one or the other copper ore exploration shafts in the very nearby Pforte Mts range; at that time including the Husab deposit, which initially had been mined for copper and only later in the 1970s became a producing fluorite mine.
The localities are hardly accessible, as they are situated in the Namib desert Namib-Naukluft National Park; however, the exploration shafts with traces of fluorite still exist.
