Lichtenberg, Landkreis Hof, Oberfranken, Bayern, Deutschland
The area around Bad Steben and Lichtenberg has seen extensive mining activities for iron and copper already during the 17th century. At the end of the 19th century most of the mines were closed.
A new mining period started in 1936, now on fluorite. The name of the new mines were Hohes Rad, Issigau, Kemlas, Rückersberg( later Lichtenberg ) and Neu Beschert Glück, all around the town of Lichtenberg.
From 1936 to 1967 some 100.000 tons of fluorite were recovered. The fluorite veins of hydrothermal origin also yielded a lot of minerals for collectors: Malachite crystals from Lichtenberg belong to the best ever found in Germany. With the closure of the last mine in 1967 mining in this part of Bavaria was finished.
