Norfolk is a ceremonial and historic county in east England, United Kingdom, bordered by Lincolnshire to the north-west, Cambridgeshire to the west and south-west, Suffolk to the south, and the North Sea to the north and east. It covers an area of approximately 5,370 km² and is one of the largest counties in England by area. Norfolk is predominantly low-lying and rural, with extensive agricultural land, broad river valleys, and an open coastline. Norwich is the county town and principal urban centre, while King’s Lynn and Great Yarmouth are important historic ports.
Geographically, Norfolk is characterised by gently undulating plains, wide estuaries, and coastal wetlands. A distinctive feature of the county is The Broads, a network of rivers, shallow lakes, and marshes formed from medieval peat workings flooded by rising water levels. Major rivers include the Yare, Wensum, Bure, Waveney, and Great Ouse, all of which drain eastwards or northwards into the North Sea. The coastline includes sandy beaches, dunes, salt marshes, and rapidly eroding soft cliffs, particularly along the north and east coasts.
Geologically, Norfolk lies within the East Anglian Basin and is underlain at depth by Upper Cretaceous chalk, which forms an important regional aquifer but is rarely exposed at the surface. Overlying the chalk are thick sequences of Pleistocene glacial deposits, including boulder clay (till), sands, and gravels laid down during multiple glacial advances. These deposits dominate the surface geology and strongly influence soils and landforms. Along the coast and river valleys, Holocene marine, estuarine, and alluvial sediments are widespread, reflecting ongoing coastal and fluvial processes.
Norfolk’s mineral and extractive heritage is limited and focused almost entirely on construction and industrial materials. Sand and gravel extraction from glacial and river terrace deposits has been widespread and remains important for construction. Clay deposits have supported brick and tile manufacture, while chalk was quarried locally for lime and agricultural use where accessible. Flint derived from chalk has been widely used since prehistoric times and remains a characteristic feature of Norfolk’s traditional buildings and churches. There is no significant metallic mineralisation.
Administratively, Norfolk is divided into district and borough councils, with Norwich as the county town. The county has a strong regional identity shaped by its flat landscapes, agricultural economy, historic market towns, and vulnerable coastline. Its geology—dominated by chalk at depth and glacial deposits at the surface—has played a key role in shaping land use, settlement patterns, and building traditions across eastern England.
