10 kilometres east of Dwellingup. Site of the 1957 exploration pit which verified the extensive and economic bauxite deposits across the Darling Range. A new company called Alcoa was formed, and the first mine opened near Jarrahdale in 1963, sending ore to a new refinery on the coast near Kwinana.

Most bauxites in Australia are lateritic, formed by intense weathering of various rock formations. The alumina in lateritic bauxite is mainly in the form of gibbsite, an aluminium oxide trihydrate.

The Darling Range region produces 16% of the world's alumina. Australia has huge deposits of bauxite, the mineral also mined at Weipa in northern Queensland, and Gove, an island in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Northern Territory. The Mitchell Plateau deposit in the Kimberley, Western Australia, remains undeveloped due to the region's remoteness.

Plavin's Pit is signposted from the Dwellingup to Boddington Road, with information boards explaining the discovery of the ore at the site.
