A salt deposit consisting of a lentil-shaped deposit more than 100 metres thick, embedded in Lower Miocene gypsum, which has been exploited by underground mining since ancient times. The salt is found in almost horizontal overlapping bands, averaging about ten centimetres thick, interspersed with thinner bands of clayey material. The Maria del Carmen mine is currently in operation.
