Amethyst-Gang, Maissau, Waldviertel, Niederösterreich, Österreich
This amethyst vein was discovered during quarry workings on the Maissauer Höhe around 1845. The vein has a dimension of 0.5 - 1 m in thickness and a confirmed length of 400 m. The estimated length is 1000 m! This vein is hosted in Maissau granite ("Maissauer Granit"), a part of the Thaya pluton.
A part of the vein was opened and since 2005, you can see it inside a museum called Amethystwelt ('Amethyst world') which was built on top of the vein. The visible outcrop shows crystals up to 15 cm in situ. This is unique in the world! The so-called Edelsteinhaus (House of Jewellery) is attached. You can see there rough material and finished jewellery and a mineral collection of the Lower Austrian part of the Bohemian Massif.
