Red Hill is a large hill between Snug and Margate, approximately 30 kilometres south of Hobart. A large almost vertical dyke like intrusion of tholeiitic dolerite, about 1.5 kilometres wide, by 7 kilometres long, outcropping at the surface on and around the hill.
Within the intrusion is a series of rocks ranging from dolerite to acid granophyre at its highest levels. The granophyre contains pyroxenes, namely orthopyroxene, pigeonite, augite, ferro-augite and ferro-hedenbergite. These form a transition phase through crystallisation and fractionation, where Fe gradually replaces Mg and Ca. The iron rich variety of ferro-augite is a typical pyroxene in the Red Hill granophyre, and fayalite also occurs there.
