There are many small historic mines in the Ravensthorpe district, but most have been lost to time. The Maori Queen Mine is considered the pioneer lease on the field, being the first applied for in the Warden's Court. It is at the northern end of the field, approximately 5 kilometres north north-east of Ravensthorpe at the base of the ranges.

The mine was established sometime in 1900 by Melbourne based Phillips River Gold Mining Company. A ten head battery, small cyanide plant, small headframe, dam, and a shaft sunk eventually to 67 metres went in. In 1902 a very rich chute was encountered at the 14 metre mark, but little ore was found below this. It appears the mine closed around 1905, and from this point on it was worked as small enterprises of individuals or pairs of prospectors.

The mine re-opened in 1907 by propectors Heatherhill and Hughes. The lease, battery and plant was purchased by Paul Cherighan in November 1910 for 115 pounds. The mine closed again in 1913.

In 1933 the battery was removed to Kundip.

Encouraged by high gold prices, the lease was taken up by Norman Bateman and P O'Shea later in 1933. In January 1934, Bateman was killed at the mine in a rockfall.

In 1938, a further two prospectors called Webb and Trapp were working the old mine, and planned to follow shoots south from the shaft. They were also retreating the old mullock pile. A mine inspectors report for that year notes: the Maori Queen Mine is showing very indifferent results, and a small portable compressor is in use. The mine was permanently abandoned shortly after.
