Carbonaceous Chondrite, Ornans-like (CO3.0; S1)
1977 Find, 181.3 g

Allan Hills A77307 (ALHA77307), classified as a CO3.0 (Ornans-like) Carbonaceous Chondrite, is a small and somewhat weathered stone largely covered by a black fusion crust. ALHA77307 is one of only 7 known members of the very primitive type CO3.0 Chondrites as of early Jul7 2015. The meteorite consists mostly of small chondrules rich in forsteritic olivine and enstatite-rich pyroxenes. Small amounts of metal (kamacite, taenite tetrataenite) are present but limonite stains and some magnetite grains give clear indications of significant weathering of some portions of the meteorite. The matrix which accounts for nearly 50% of the meteorite is extremely fine-grained and is genetically related to the chondrule population. However, within the matrix are various exotic components which include unusually early hibonite and corundum (believed to be among the very earliest condensates of the ancient solar nebula) as well as a large number of very tiny presolar diamond, graphite, silicates, oxides, and silicon carbide grains. The presolar phases are usually revealed by their isotopic anomalies and are, unfortunately, only partially characterized mineralogically.

Most other CO3.0 chondrites are larger than ALHA77307, but ALHA77307 was apparently the first to be recognized as a CO3.0 and has consequently received quite a bit of attention for such a modest-sized stone.

Nota Bene: ALHA77307 may be referred to as 'Allan Hills 77307' or 'ALH 77307'. These usages reflect simpler conventions adopted after the meteorite had been formally named.
