This small goldfield is about 2 kilometres long and located 5 kilometres north-west of the Coobina chromite mine, and 5 kilometres south-east of the Jimblebar copper prospects. In turn the area is about 15 kilometres south south-east of the major Jimblebar iron ore mine.
Sunny South and Shearer's (1 kilometre apart) were the main mines between 1930 to 1937, producing 3670oz of gold. The earliest report found was 1926 stating the field contained two shallow shafts and a number of costeans. A 1928 survey party panned the area as worthless. There was also Middle Watch, Pilliwinkle and Koondra prospects. On average 15 men worked the field at any one time during the 1930's.
Mineralisation in the vicinty of Sunny South is three stacked lodes, each dipping about 40 degrees to the east, along a strike length of at least 600 metres. Another lode is south of here at a 400 metre strike length. Historically the miners only explored the footwall. The deposit contains the Battery Fault System and is hosted by a sequence of banded iron formations, mafic volcanics, and thin felsic intrusions. The ore is altered greenstone densely impregnated with pyrite, lesser amounts of magnetite, and gold particles embedded in gangue minerals (it does not name). Or the gold particles are included in the pyrite, or interstitial between the pyrite crystals.
The site shows as scattered old shafts, trenches, and surface workings bordering a north-south ridge for about one kilometre. The Mindat co-ordinates are on the Shearer workings. The mine to the south-east which stands out on satellite images is the Coombina Chromite Mine, and is not the same location.
