Rohožník - Konopiská
"Gypsum formed as "desert rose"...Rohožník is long time known locality for nice specimens of gypsum. There was two quarries. One open quarry for limestone (coordinates given here) and a second quarry in locality Konopiská for clay. Both raw materials were used in former state-owned cement factory, from 1990s privatized and bought by the Holcim group. In the clay quarry were often found hundreds of gypsum "desert roses" and the same locality was very well known as a palaeontologic locality with fossil sea snails, crabs, cancers, corals etc.
Presently, the clay quarry is abandoned, flooded with water and adjusted for lake with few islands and its status is "private natural preserved area".
Some rare specimens of gypsum were found with prehistoric shells ingrowns. But 90% of gypsum druses are without shells. Some of these druses are built from very aesthetic transparent, golden yellow-green leaf-like crystals.
