Gold was first discovered near Gympie by James Nash in 1867. His claim led to Queensland's first gold rush, and within two months 15 000 men were searching for alluvial gold along the gullies in the area. Reef gold production started in 1868, and large scale deep mining from 1872 to 1925.
Gold at Deep Creek is derived from the weathering of several gold reefs in the vicinity- Columbia, Smithfield, Monkland, Never Mind and Russell. The area was extensively worked in the first couple of years, however nuggets have been found in the gully in recent years. Panning can be conducted in the creek, and the inside bends of the creek are recommended. Metal detectors are also allowed.
The fossicking area is located in the southern area of the town of Gympie. A permit is required to fossick which can be obtained from the nearby history museum located on the Bruce Highway at the southern entrance to Gympie.
