A Cu-Ag occurrence located in sec. 7, 18 & 19, T4N, R1E, Cimarron Meridian, about 1 kilometer E to SE of the town of Paoli (the approximate center of the deposit is near where a power line and gas line cross), on private land (private lease). Discovered prior to 1900. Owned by Joint Venture and operated by Wolf Ridge Minerals Company (1967 - ); owned by Teton Exploration Drilling Company, Inc. (1971). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.

Mineralization is a deposit (Mineral occurrence model information: Model code: 203; USGS model code: unassigned; Deposit model name: Sediment-hosted Cu, red-bed; Mark3 model number: 97). hosted in Early Permian sandstone (a greenish-gray, friable, well-sorted sandstone composed of fine to medium, subrounded grains with interbeds of red claystone and siltstone) of the Wellington Formation. The ore body is comprised of roll-fronts in paleochannels at a thickness of 4 meters. Controls for ore emplacement included an oxidation front along the paleochannel in sandstone. Local rocks include alluvium.

Local geologic structures include: a paleochannel.

Production statistics: Year: 1914: Material = hand sorted ore shipped from an open cut on the Byars (Criswell) prospect several miles southwest of Paoli. Recovery percentage: Primary = Ag at 1,200 grams/metric ton.

Reserves and resources data: Type: in-situ (estimate year: 1972): inferred: 6,500,000 metric tons. Estimated by Teton Exploration and Drilling Company, Inc. from drill results. Tonnage and copper grade from Long (1992). Silver grade from Shockey et al (1974).

Commodity: Cu = 0.75 weight percent (1972); Ag = 206 grams/metric ton (1972).

Deposit type: Sediment-hosted Cu, red-bed

ⓘ Anilite

ⓘ Azurite
Formula: Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2
ⓘ Baryte
Formula: BaSO4
Description: In sections 18 and 19 southeast of Paoli, large barite-claystone concretions cover the floors of several gullies. The barite is crystalline, assumes several pale tints, but does not form distinct crystals. These concretions range up to 25 cm in diameter. Almost pure barite balls of radiating crystal structure occur in scattered locations throughout the Paoli district. Known locally as “raisin rocks,” these barite nodules are almost concentrated where removed from clay by weathering. The nodules range from a few millimeters to several centimeters in diameter. A few exhibit yellow to orange fluorescence in concentric bands under short-wave ultraviolet radiation. Elsewhere barite is a cementing agent of the sandstone, and occasionally forms the well-known “rose rocks” consisting of rounded intergrown plates with much included sand, in the rough shape of a flower. The Paoli “roses” are poorly formed and paler in color than those found in Cleveland County to the north.
