Meteorite di Renazzo, Renazzo, Cento, Provincia di Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna, Italia

Official name: Renazzo
Synonyms: Arenazzo, Cento, Ferrara
Observed fall: yes
Fall: 1824, January 15, 20:30 hrs
Coordinates (Catalogue of Meteorites): 44°46'01"N, 11°17'46"E
Approx. recovered weight: 10 kg, 1083 g preserved
Carbonaceous chondrite, type CR2

The Renazzo (CR2) meteorite fell on 15 January 1824 with bright lights and loud sounds near the village of Renazzo, north of Cento. Three stones with a total mass of approximately 10 kg were recovered, the largest weighing about 5 kg. It was described by Cordier (1827), with an analysis by Laugier, and there are numerous references to it in the nineteenth-century literature, which is enumerated by Wülfing (1897). Wülfing was able to account for some 1083 grams in collections, the largest amount (441 grams) being in the Mineralogical Institute of the University of Bologna. Renazzo is the prototype for the CR (Renazzo-like) Carbonaceous Chondrites and was the first of only three observed CR falls. However, a number of additional CR meteorites have now been recovered. Tafassasset, recovered from Niger in 2000, has a reported mass of 114 kg.

Like all carbonaceous chondrite, Renazzo and other CR carbonaceous chondrites have nearly solar Mg/Si ratios and similar oxygen isotope ratios. The CR chemical group is further distinguished by large, abundant porphyritic chondrules (50 vol%), abundant metal (5-8 vol%), and fine-grained matrix that is commonly hydrated. Renazzo carbonaceous chondrite provided the first hints that meteorites might contain pristine stardust with anomalous levels of isotopes of xenon (Reynolds & Turner, 1964).
