The Bassar Phosphates occurrences of Togo are located within the Schist Group of Atacora and Buem Structural Units of the Dahomeyide Orogenic Belt (Neoproterozoic). These schists are considered tectonic and metamorphic equivalents of the Oti Supergroup (Vendian) of the Volta Basin.

The Bassar phosphatic sequence, up to 30 m in thickness, crop out intermittently over an 80 km strike and consists of interbedded phosphorites, phosphatic quartzites, and weakly phosphatic quartz-sericite schists. They have been subjected to at least 2 phases of deformation and are metamorphosed to Zeolite-Greenschist Facies.

Outcrops are lenticular in shape up to 10-25 m thick, 100 -2,500 m in length –sub-vertical to steeply-dipping to the east, locally duplicated and thickened.

The phosphorites are typically beige to brown in colour, fine-grained, indurate, massive to finely bedded in nature while the phosphatic-quartzites are grey-brown, fine to medium-grained, finely foliated, and porous in appearance.
