Occurrence of Cretaceous sedimentary rocks embedding exotic blocks of ophiolitic rocks. In particular, the so-called hydrothermalites are characterised by presence of interesting minerals (anatase, brookite, millerite, jamborite, reevesite, etc).

In this area, for many years occupied by a rubbish dump, the earthworks have exposed also some septarian concretions containing calcite.

This historical locality, where millerite was found for the first time in Italy, was known as Casale di Bombiana (Bombicci, 1871, 1873, and 1874) and sometimes was also reported as "Bombiana" or "Casale di Bombiana near Porretta".

Ca' dei Ladri is one of the three type localties for jamborite (Morandi & Dalrio, 1973), a Ni-bearing species recently redefined on material from Rio Vesale in the neighbouring province of Modena (Bindi et al., 2015).
