CV3-ox Carbonaceous Chondrite, Weathered

In 1943 a single 6.3 kg stone was plowed up, identified as a meteorite, but placed aside. In 1993 it was sold to a meteorite collector and soon thereafter recognized as both a very weathered and a very unusual (Vigarano-like) carbonaceous chondrite. CV meteorites are distinguished by large chondrules, large refractory inclusions and abundant matrix as well as by their oxygen isotope ratios. Axtell belongs to the oxidized subgroup of the CV meteorites [which includes Allende, Grosnaja, Kaba and Mokoia] and, indeed, was suspected of being a stray piece of Allende. It is, however, significantly different in several respects. A small, but significant fraction of Axtell’s inclusions are reduced. Furthermore, Axtell lacks the sulfide veins and has escaped the general sulfidization which has affected some oxidized CVs. Axtell’s weathering obviously creates significant challenges in interpretation, but it is reported that the inclusions and most chondrules are not nearly as weathered as the stained and rusty matrix.
