Uranium mineralization was indicated by a strong radiometric anomaly during a BMR ground survey in 1950, and the prospect was named after the geophysicist in charge. Trenching across the anomaly exposed high grade secondary uranium mineralization. Two shafts were sunk. Dyson's deposit was 60 m long, 8 m wide and 100 m deep and was mined by both underground and open cut operations. Open cut mining began in November 1957 and was completed in November 1957. Secondary mineralization continued to a depth of about 13 m and uraninite was known from about 25 m depth.
