At the Birthday mine, free milling gold occurs in syntectonic quartz veins and in enclosing hornblende-biotite-calcite schists within a ductile shear zone that strikes N75”E and dips at 35” to the northwest. Mineral lineations on the shear plane are generally down dip. The shear zone is developed in medium-grained massive amphibolite consisting mainly of hornblende and plagioclase (An 25) with little or no quartz. The same plagioclase composition in both the altered and sheared amphibolite, and in the massive unaltered amphibolite indicates that shearing occurred under P-T conditions very similar to those reflected by the wall rock (van Reenen et al, 1994).
