Fell 1 July 1920.
3 stones in a larger strewnfield.
Ordinary chondrite, H5.
After a fireball and detonations, stones fell in at least three places over a 18.5 km long x 3 km wide strewn field and were subsequently recovered. One of the stones broke into 4 pieces. Prominent olivine-rich and pyroxene-rich chondrules are found within a matrix which contains olivine grains, Fe-Ni metal, and assorted other phases. While most pyroxene is orthopyroxene, orthopyroxene-clinopyroxene intergrowths were also observed.
Zircons inclusions found within chromite clusters have provided evidence of a very ancient age for the Simmern material. Small, but significant differences between chromites and Cr-rich spinels have been used to further characterize the cooling histories of Simmern and other chondrites.
Simmern is one of 11 witnessed H-chondrite falls recovered in Germany since 1785. As of 2000 the largest Simmern specimens were held at Berlin's Museum für Naturkunde (366 g) and at Bonn Universität (200 g).
