Iron meteorite, octahedrite (IIIAB, Om)
Fell, April 1961; 85 kg

In 1967 a metallic mass was recovered near Kayakent in central Turkey which villagers reported as having fallen several years before. The meteorite surface displays mild weathering features which presumably occurred during the rainy seasons while the meteorite had been left outside. The meteorite — dimensions 30.5 x 26 x 25.5 cm — is covered with regmaglypts and its black fusion crust is still intact in many places. In etched sections kamacite is prominent as long lamellae within the Widmanstätten structure with taenite and plessite covering ~30% of the surface. Schreibersite is common as boundary precipitates and as small blebs inside plessite fields. A small amount of troilite and chromite are also present. Magnetite and wüstite are found in the fusion crust. Cosmic ray exposure ages of ~400 million years are reported.

Kayakent is one of 11 witnessed IIIAB meteorite falls. As of late 2014 the IIIAB irons constituted about 27% of all recovered iron meteorites listed at the Meteoritical Society's 'Meteoritical Bulletin Database'. The main mass has been with the Department of Astronomy, Ege University in Izmir, Turkey.
