Iron meteorite, hexahedrite (IIAB)
Fall 31 March 1908, 1.230 g
During hostilities, a single worker thought he had heard a cannon ball detonation followed by a sizzling sound — but he soon chanced upon a fusion crusted meteoric mass [5.5% Ni] which had broken a branch of an apple tree and scattered the soil. Underneath the fusion crust and entry-scuplted regmaglypts, the small meteorite (~ 11 x 6 x 5 cm) consists entirely or almost entirely of a single kamacite crystal. A single slice has been cut and deeply etched to reveal the kamacite, but the rough surface is not suitable for detailed mineralogical investigation. Neumann bands indicative of preterrestrial shocks are present. The main mass is part of the publicly displayed collection of the Naturhistorisches Museum in Wiens (Vienna).
IIAB irons are the 3rd largest of the 13 chemical group of iron meteorites. There have been, however, only 6 witnessed and recorded IIAB falls. Avce is the smallest of the six falls. Apparently, it is also very simple mineralogically.
