Iron meteorite, Octahedrite (IVA, Of)
Fall, 4 Oct 1975; 14.25 kg

The Ningbo iron meteorite is the 3rd of only 4 witnessed IVA falls. The meteorite [Ni 8.4 wt%; Co 0.38 wt%] is texturally and mineralogically dominated by the kamacite-taenite intergrowth [Widmanstätten pattern] found in all octahedrites. Neumann bands are found in the kamacite. Plessite and troilite are also reported. Excess amounts of Ag-107 from the decay of Pd-107 (half-life 6.5 Ma) found in Ningbo and other IVA irons indicate that the formation of the Ningbo parent body core occurred very, very early during the formational epoch of our solar system. Somewhat inconsistent cosmic ray exposure ages (~100 Ma & little higher) suggest that Ningbo has had a somewhat different collisional history than several other IVA irons with larger ages of several hundred million years.

Details about the circumstances of the fall and additional mineralogical information may be available in untranslated Chinese sources. The main mass is at the Beijing Planetarium.
