Octahedrite (IVA, Of)
Find 1863, 41 kg

A large iron-rich mass found in a quarry 5 meters below the surface was eventually recognized as meteoritic. Indeed, the weathered Widmanstätten signature of its octahedral structure had been somewhat amplified by preferential weathering which left prominent taenite features in some regions. Previously partially or completely remelted troilite occurs in nodules. Schreibersite appears to be sparse. Buchwald (1975) did not observe schreibersite, but Cohen and, much later, Ramdohr (1973) recorded its presence.

The 79 IVA irons listed at The Meteoritical Society's 'Meteoritical Database' represent ~7% of all recovered irons. Almost all of the Obernkirchen mass was acquired by the British Museum in London.
