Located 10 kilometres south south-east of Yalgoo, off the Yalgoo to Fields Find Road. A straight tunnel has been carved 200 metres through the base of a hill to the other side.
Constructed by English investors in 1896, its aim was to find gold, but for 550 tonnes of rock only 3 kilograms of gold was found.
Two theories seem to exist as to how it got its name. It may have been named after the Joker Proprietary Mine operating at the same time nearby by William Nottle, although the tunnel itself was on the Star of Bibertha lease. Alternatively it was a colloquial name given to it by the good people of Yalgoo, who saw it as a scam of money from overseas investors.
The site is a marked local attraction. With a torch you can walk through the tunnel, as long as you don't mind sharing it with creepy crawly insects and bats. The bats at least are cute. From personal experience please do not disturb them, as a swarm of bats will fly into you, like some sort of B grade horror film.
