Stony-iron, Mesosiderite-B4
Find, 1857; 89.4 kg, 3 pieces

Three pieces were found, the largest an irregular egg-shaped ~39 kg mass of dimensions (~40 x 25 x 17 cm). Somewhat brittle, the mass is a mixture of coarse grained silicates accompanied by metallic grains and nodules. When polished and etched, many Fe-Ni nodules display a very nicely formed Widmanstätten pattern. Within other nodules are silicate grains and/or rusty areas. Mincy is classified as a mesosiderite-B4 with intermediate plagioclase abundance [relative to pyroxene and olivine] and a coarse-grained matrix dominated by shock melt features. Within the matrix are small grains of Fe-Ni metal, occasional large olivine crystals, and minor troilite. A number of additional minor accessories have been reported over the decades. An unusual dunite clast (F6241B) helps to make Mincy's mineralogical melange even more poly-minerallic than the already complex mineralogical suite usually reported in mesosiderites.

Of the 50 or so fully or partially classified mesosiderites, Mincy is one of only two Mesosiderite-B4 meteorites. While several moderate masses (1-4 kg) have been widely distributed, the main mass (39 kg) has been housed at the Naturhistorisches Museum in Wiens (Vienna), Austria.
