Originally owned in 1895 by James Hagan and James Smith at 6 acres (GML 867). It was on the same lode as the Golden Gate Mine. Four prospecting shafts had been sunk. In November 1896 the mine was purchased by Timperley Gale and Co. Subsequent crushings were lower than expected. The gold turned a deep purple when sulphuric acid was added during the treatment process. This made the gold un-saleable, and confused everyone. The suggestion was some other mineral was with the gold. This was possibly a tin chloride, the method used in ancient times to produce a purple dye.
One 10 tonne crushing is reported May 1898, the mine now owned by Ephraim Walsh and Jack Wallace. The gold from this crushing went missing during the regular police escort of gold from Cue to Perth. Across 1896 to 1898, several crushings are reported, then all falls quiet. Officially 60 tonnes was crushed for 125 oz for this period.
Then in 1995, St Barbara Ltd identified a new gold resource, it named Black Swan South. Subsequently an open pit was developed, which is now abandoned. It is just south of the Cue-Beringarra Road, on the eastern edge of the main group of pits at Cuddingwarra.
The Black Swan and Black Swan south have a combined estimated resource of around 2.5 million tonnes at 3.77 g/t yielding 280 000 oz of gold.
