The location was initially prospected in 1894 with a shaft to 15 feet on a reef 4 feet wide. However, they then came across a large 49 foot thick bar and abandoned the lease. In 1911, James Oates, after suffering much poor luck prospecting the Murchison field, decided to give the Hidden Treasure lease a go. After much work breaking through the bar, he discovered the reef continues, and came across stone laced with gold. He sold the mine for 35 000 pounds, moved to Melbourne, and bought a farm for his sons near Lismore. The new owners were James Chesson and J.W. Heydon. Initially across 1912 they obtained rich stone and made 40 000 pounds. But the shoot was short, and by 1913 gold values declined rapidly and mining ceased. The mine is located about 4 kilometres north-west of Cue, and can be found along tracks westwards from the old abandoned racecourse. The area is littered with groups of shafts and diggings, and identifying individual locations is difficult. At the time of writing the location appears to have a permanent residence, and people are asked not to access the site.
