LEW 87009
Carbonaceous chondrite (CK6; S3; W1)
Find, 1982; 50.5 g
A single stone, still largely covered by its fusion crust was recovered. The hand specimen has no obvious chondrules or clasts. The matrix lacks chondritic structure and is mostly a coarse-grained aggregate of olivine (Fa31), pyroxene (Fs12Wo44) with minor plagioclase (An44-48). Minor opaques are mostly 10-30 µm blebs of magnetite with lesser, trace amounts of pentlandite and pyrite. Glassy veins are indicative of pre-terrestrial, but post-formational shock.
The CK (Karoonda-like) carbonaceous chondrites are one of 8 currently recognized carbonaceous chondrite groups. CK chondrites are distinguished by abundant fine-grained matrix, mm-sized chondrules, occasional refractory inclusions, and a high degree of oxidation. Like LEW 87009, most CK chondrites have been metamorphosed to type 4 or higher.
