EET 87507
Carbonaceous chondrite (CK5; S2; W3)
Find, 1987; 36.2 g
One of several CK chondrites found on the blue ice of Elephant Moraine. A few chondrules (mostly POP) and a few rare CAIs are seen in thin sections. The matrix is rich in olivine (Fa~30), plagioclase, magnetite, and pyroxene (Fs~27). Opaques include a few sulfides in addition to the more prominent magnetite.
EET87507 itself has been paired with 87529 and EET87526. Whether all or most of the other CK meteorites from Elephant moraine found in 1987 are also members of a single impact is, of course, difficult to determine with certainty. Most Antarctic meteorite fragments are very small and, even if they were members of a single fall, may have different weathering histories both under and above the ice.
CK (Karoonda-like) carbonaceous chondrites are one of 8 currently recognized chemical groups of carbonaceous chondrites. The CK chondrites are distinguished by fine-grained matrix (~75 vol%), mm-sized chondrules, and a relatively high degree of oxidation.
