Gnarlbine as a word in the Coolgardie area can mean a number of things. Initially Coolgardie was called Gnarlbine. There is a Gnarlbine Rock and Gnarlbine Soak, which was an important water source for prospectors travelling from Albany to Coolgardie. The soak and government bore supplied Coolgardie with water for a time. Gnarlbine Rocks is several kilometres south of the mine.

Mining-wise, the Gnarlbine Gold Mine is about 30 kilometres south-west of Coolgardie, and 200 metres west of the Queen Victoria Rocks Road. It is presently marked by an abandoned open pit mined at some stage over the past 20 years. Historically there was also a Gnarlbine Mine here, a mine named the Great Gnarlbine in the same vicinity, and several other small mines and prospecting leases with individual names, which would get lumped under the name Gnarlbine. It is likely as time went by, the leases were consolidated under the Gnarlbine name.

Limited information was found under the Gnarlbine Mine name. In 1910 its reported the battery from the Prince of Wales mine had been transferred to the Gnarlbine Mine. The mine was owned
at this time by a syndicate of Goomalling farmers. They occupied the mine until 1915. The 10 head battery and buildings were then sold to a Boulder firm. F.W. Bows from Bows Farm in Esperance states in 1949, that O.F.W. Palmer, later publican of the Bullabulling Hotel, obtained a lot of gold from the mine across 1895-1896. Palmer was later involved in the Great Gnarlbine mine. Bow states the farming syndicate could not pay him for cartage, and mortgaged the plant to him.

In 1923, a Sydney syndicate was exploring the Gnarlbine Mine and had sunk a new shaft. The old shafts and workings were in a state of disrepair.

Little then appears to have happened, and the mine was possibly the haunt of the lone prospector. In 1936, Yellowdine Gold Mines NL took out an 18 month option over the mine. The lease was 12 acres and 3 shafts are noted to 300 ft, 80 ft and 70 ft. A 2 head battery and various equipment was installed.
