Pianosa is an island in the Tuscan Archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy. It is about 10.25 km² (3.96 sq mi) in area, with a coastal perimeter of 26 km (16 mi). It has a triangular shape, 18 km of coastal development, and a max. altitude of 29 m a.s.l. Administratively it belongs to the municipality of Campo nell'Elba (Elba Island).

The island is made up of Neogenic and Quaternary sediments; pelitic Miocene sediments crop out at the base of the cliff along the south-western coast, while the bio-calcarenitic Pliocene sediments cover most part of the island. A vast range of karst formations, both superficial, such as different erosion micro- and macrolandforms, and subterranean, such as caves and conduits (sometimes opened in the cliffs and visible only from the sea), are present. Some caves (such as Il Marchese, etc.) are characterized by the presence of calcite speleothems (Graciotti et al., 2002-2003).
